Telling the untold story of Vancouver’s hidden energy provider.
Challenge.
For over 50 years, Creative Energy has quietly powered the heart of downtown Vancouver through its district energy system, delivering clean, cost-effective steam to iconic buildings—even the Gastown Steam Clock. But despite their significant role in shaping the city’s sustainability and skyline, their story remained virtually invisible to the public.
Now, with a landmark redevelopment underway to modernize their existing steam plant and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 38,000 tonnes, Creative Energy faced a new challenge: how do you bring visibility and understanding to something the city depends on, but rarely sees? The story needed to blend heritage and innovation—past, present, and future—and make people care about where their energy comes from.
Solution.
We created a foundational brand video centred around the idea of “metaphorical energy” to tell the story of who they are and how they’re changing the future of district energy.
To build long-term visibility, we also documented key construction milestones, shot dynamic timelapse footage of the redevelopment, and designed eye-catching hoarding signage. The result: a suite of strategic content that introduces Creative Energy to the public—not just as a utility provider, but as a city builder with a vision for a cleaner future.
